DAVAO CITY, Philippines – New sets of Barangay Captains and Kagawads here took their oath on Monday, which was administered by Mayor Sara Duterte-Carpio before assuming office on June 30, 2018.

According to the Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG), there are around 182 elected Barangay Captains, who are composed of 143 males and only 39 females.

Out of the 182, only 63 Barangay Captains are new to their position while there are 96 incumbent officials who sought for re-election and 23 returning Barangay Captains who won the recent Barangay and SK elections.

In the Sangguniang Kabataan position, the DILG said, there are 94 male and 88 female chairpersons.

Meanwhile, Mayor Sara Duterte-Carpio challenged the new set of Barangay officials to plan as early as the 2nd day of office for their 3-year term and additional 1-year plan in the barangay election would be postponed.

According to the mayor, the vision of the City government is to establish a peaceful and progressive Davao City while the mission is to pursue peace and progress through sustainable development.

“We will aim for development but we have to ensure that it is sustainable development,” said Mayor Sara.

The mayor also asked the barangay officials to organize and institutionalize the Sitios and convert it into Puroks for uniformity. Though it is not required by the law, Mayor Sara said this would be helpful in intelligence monitoring as well as the peace and order campaign.

Mayor Sara also added that she is eyeing to establish a federation of Purok presidents who will complete the city government structure. (davaotoday.com)
