DAVAO CITY — 120 teachers and 120 students from 60 public elementary schools all over Mindanao came together in a camp designed to heighten the science and mathematics learning experience.
The first ever science camp under the Mindanao Opportunities for Vitalized Education for the Upgrading of Science (Move Ups) gathered teachers and students especially from among Muslim dominated schools from Lanao del Sur, Marawi City, Maguindanao, and Shariff Kabunsuan last April 14 to 18, 2009 at Philippine Science High School southern Mindanao campus in Tugbok District, Davao City.
Department of Science and Technology (DOST) secretary Estrella F. Alabastro highlighted the need to enhance mathematics and science education to students. She said this is especially true for mathematics because the subject is very challenging and could help students to think logically.
Move Ups also included a teacher and principal training program. It is hoped the siecne camp helped teachers be more competent and helped them expand their capabilities as an educator. Alabastro said teachers should make science and mathematics more interesting to students.
Principals will also be trained to become more effective and efficient administrators. (PIA XI)
