DAVAO CITY—The Samahan ng mga Mag-aaral ng Sining at Komunikasyon (SINIKOM) an academic organization of the Mass Communications and Interdisciplinary students of Ateneo de Davao University (AdDU) is hosting a back-to-school book collection drive for the benefit of the Tboli Sbú Senior High School (TSSHS) starting today, July 4.
SINIKOM External Vice President Rexor Amancio told reporters on Monday, July 4, during this week’s Kapehan sa Dabaw that the school, located at Barangay Lemdalag, Lake Sebu, South Cotabato currently has around 80-90 senior high school students.
“We conducted a needs assessment, and then that’s what we found that they don’t have a library yet and other resource materials,” he said.
Amancio who immersed in the community on April 28, said that as he and his companions were there during an exposure for the Brigada Eskwela at Lake Sebu and saw that the school neither had a library nor internet connection thus, the start of the book drive initiative.
“We want to collect books for them, [and] we asked them if they really need it,” Amancio said.
The drive dubbed as “Today’s readers, tomorrow’s leaders,” was adopted from a project of SM City Davao which is one of the organization’s partners. Two booths are open for accepting donations: from July 4-10, at the SM City Davao Annex, and the other at the AdDU Roxas Pavilion for until the last week of July.
The campaign aims to collect at least more than 100 new and used books including encyclopedias, dictionaries, language books, and history books before the end of this month.
Amancio added that this is their first time to launch this kind of project and they hope to venture on working with communities in need here.
“As student leaders, it’s our responsibility to serve our fellow students, but since it’s also a challenge for us to really extend to those who really need, we are encouraging our fellow students to participate in this advocacy,” he said.
He added that volunteers involved will “man the booths, and help in promoting the campaign” which will aid in harnessing skills in communication, public relations, and marketing. He said that with enough resources there will be a possibility to send volunteers to assist the T’boli senior high school students in tutorials.
Noe Petel, Secretary General for SINIKOM said that volunteers are welcome to help with the drive. As of now the project has tapped 20 fourth year student volunteers. (davaotoday.com)
