DAVAO CITY— The city government said it will veer away from the usual grandiose celebration of Kadayawan festival in the past years and will make this year’s festival  “simple and meaningful”.

Acting city mayor Paolo Duterte said that unlike the previous celebrations of Kadayawan festival, this year will have a simple celebration to focus on the struggle faced by the indigenous peoples.

He said this will  allow the people “to concentrate more on the issues concerning our Lumads and Muslim brothers and sisters.”

He said that the simple celebration of the Kadayawan festival this year will show the city’s “concern”  to the Lumad struggles and injustices committed against them.

“I believe that if we continue to turn a blind eye to their plight, Kadayawan will be meaningless,” he said.

Duterte signed the Executive Order (EO) on creating the executive committee of the Kadayawan Festival.

The acting mayor said that they already requested Art Boncato Jr., Department of Tourism Director for Mindanao to co-chair the executive committee for the festival. Duterte will head the committee, while Councilor Al Ryan Alejandre, Vingelin Bajon from the City Accountants Office and Raul Nadela Jr, chief of staff of the City Mayor’s Office will sit as members.(davaotoday.com)
