DAVAO CITY, Philippines—The City Environment and Natural Resources Office said that the city would have another landfill by the year-end.
Engineer Eliza Madrazo, Cenro chief, said there would be two landfills – one is located in Marilog District and another in Paquibato District. She said that each landfill span five to 10 hectares of land.
She said the city already allocated P500 million for the landfill and hoped to finish the construction by December. A team would be scouting for the exact location of the landfills.
The landfill site in Marilog District is expected to begin by mid-2017. The Marilog and Paquibato landfills would replace the New Carmen sanitary landfill in Tugbok District which may reach its full capacity by the next 18 months.
Cenro is planning to extend the area of the current landfill by another five to 10 hectares in order to accommodate the city’s growing population, according to Madrazo, adding that a study was still being conducted to determine its feasibility.
Meanwhile, Dolores Remojo, acting assistant head of operations of Cenro, said that the New Carmen landfill may be able to extend its full capacity of 1.2 million metric tons in 16 years if only proper segregation were followed. The landfill was built on a 3.8 hectare area and used in 2009. (davaotoday.com)
