DAVAO CITY, Philippines – Davao City Mayor Sara Duterte-Carpio is mulling requiring building proposals to have earthquake resistance mechanisms.

This as the mayor said Thursday that she wants to defer its position for building heights limitation in the city.

Mayor Duterte-Carpio said this after she visited the collapsed the building of Ecoland 4000 that injured nine individuals after a 6.5 magnitude earthquake strike parts of Mindanao.

“But because I am not an urban planner and engineer, we leave it to the CPDO which is assisting the City Council and the City Engineer’s Office with regards to engineering requirements,” the mayor said.

Recently, the Sangguniang Panlusod of Davao passed on the third and final reading of the ordinance that determines the structural heights limits set by the city government.

Part of the measures determined by the recently passed ordinance is that developers should seek approval from the Buildings and Structures Height Regulation Committee.

This requirement is to be followed aside from a height clearance permit from the Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines before the construction of their buildings in the city.

Meanwhile, the mayor also said that the management of the Ecoland 4000 Condominium may face possible legal action if proven by the City Legal Office that it violated the recommendation to condemn the building before the strong happened on Thursday morning.

The mayor spoke to media after her visit to the collapsed building of Ecoland 4000 that she will discuss the possible legal action against the management if proven that there are lapses after the City Engineering Office ordered a forced evacuation of the building tenants before the earthquake.

Mayor Duterte-Carpio said the CIO already informed the management that the building had a structural integrity problem and was no longer fit for residential use.

“The building administrator said there are some units owners who are still staying because they had nowhere to go,” the mayor said.(davaotoday.com)
