The 4th Pulang Bagani Company of the New People’s Army (PBC-NPA) in Southern Mindanao condemns the brutal killing of Conrado Cañete, a 57-year old farmer whose sole basis for being the target for murderis that he is the father to Ka Jinggoy of the 4th PBC-NPA.
He was last seen attending the fiesta celebration of Brgy. Banlag, Monkayo, Compostela Valley on November 28. Since the 25th infantry battalion of the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) maintains a company post in the barangay, its members together with 7th special forces-AFP and Civilian Armed Forces Guerilla Unit (Cafgu) elements were all around the place. Conrado and other civilians were seen joined by these AFP elements in one of the drinking sessions common especially during fiestas.
He failed to return to their house in adjacent barangay San Isidro. The following dawn, several witnesses noticed a car that slowed down in Sitio Highlaner, Brgy. Gabanan in the same town. From inside the vehicle, a body was dumped in the roadside and armed men proceeded to riddle it with bullets. Conrado’s body bore 12 bullet wounds.
All indications clearly point to the culpability of the 25th IB-AFP and 7th SF-AFP in this gruesome murder. Conrado Cañete and his family had long been under surveillance by the AFP. The series of successful tactical offensives by an NPA unit commanded by his son made him a marked man. Indeed, the AFP murders family members of known comrades in a bid to exact revenge and pressure the targeted NPA personality just like what had befallen on Ka Parago’s daughter Rebelyn.
We grieve with his family, relatives, friends, neighbors and all the masses in Monkayo. We join their quest for justice and call on the AFP to stop attacking without compunction unarmed and innocent civilians in the name of Arroyo’s Oplan Bantay Laya campaign.
