DAVAO CITY — The Department of Science and Technology (DOST) has scholarship programs for those who took up or may want to take up courses in the fields related to Science and Technology.
Scholars will be given privileges including free tuition fee, book allowance, transportation allowance, and a monthly living allowance.
There are various programs available.
There is the Junior Level Science Scholarship (JLSS) for all regular third year college students throughout the academic year 2009-2010 who are at present enrolled in state universities under any of the recognized priority courses: Agricultural chemistry, Biochemistry, Biology, Chemical engineering, Chemistry, Computer engineering, Physics and Statistics, etc. The deadline for the program application will be on June 26, 2009.
There is the Accelerated Science and Technology Human Resource Development Program (ASTHRD). This is offered to those engaged in research, particularly for professionals, fresh graduates and on-going masteral and doctorate students, with courses in Agriculture, Forestry and natural resources, Biology, Biotechnology, Chemistry, Earth and space science, Environment, Fisheries and Marine science, Materials science and engineering, Mathematics, Medical and pharmaceutical sciences, Microelectronics, Information and communication technologies and Physics. Deadline for this is on August 31, 2009.
The third program is the Engineering research and development for technology (ERDT) Human Resource Development Program and is available to professionals with a Bachelor’s or Masteral degree in Engineering. Study placement for ERDT includes Ateneo de Manila University, De La Salle University, Mindanao State University-IIT, University of the Philippines Diliman and Los Baos, and the University of San Carlos. Deadline for ERDT application is on August 31, 2009.
There is the DOST-SEI undergraduate scholarship, a program for graduating high school students with high aptitude in science and technology and who would want to practice priority fields of study in basic sciences, engineering and other applied sciences and science teaching. These students may avail of programs under Republic Act (RA) 7687 or the Science and Technology (S&T) scholarship act of 1994. Both are awarded to talented and deserving students coming from low-income families.
The DOST-SEI Merit Scholarships, on the other hand, does not take the student’s family’s socio-economic status into consideration. The scholarship program is granted to students with high aptitude in science, mathematics and technology. The deadline of application is on September 30, 2009.
The implemented scholarship programs are outlined by DOST to help the country in international competitiveness , boost innovation potential, and step up the production of high-level human resources needed for science and technology endeavors.
