DAVAO CITY— The Davao City Police Office said that a liquor ban will be observed during election day on Monday, May 9, citing as basis a local ordinance and a Commission on Elections (Comelec) resolution.
The liquor ban is set starting on May 8, at 12 midnight and will end until the voting ends on May 9.
DCPO spokesperson Chief Inspector Milgrace Cajes Driz said that those who will be caught “shall be punished with an imprisonment of not less than one year but not more than six years and shall not be subject to probation.”
The Comelec said in news reports that “It shall be unlawful for any person, including owners and managers of hotels, resorts, restaurants, and other establishments of the same nature to sell, furnish, offer, buy, serve, or take intoxicating liquor anywhere in the Philippines.”
There are establishments, however, that are exempted by the resolution, said Driz.
Establishment like hotels, resorts, restaurant, and other establishments that are certified by the Department of Tourism are exempted
Driz added that “establishments catering to foreign tourist will be exempted by the liquor ban resolution.”
For peaceful elections
Meanwhile, the DCPO called on the voters to have an orderly and peaceful election.
“We deployed more or less three to four police officer in every precinct but it will still depend on the number of voters and how big the area is,” Driz explained.
The DCPO has deployed around 2,500 police officers in the city.
Driz also said that there are no reported areas that will be added on the Election Watchlist Areas (EWAs).
Under EWAs are the areas of Paquibato, Baguio and Marilog districts in Davao City.(davaotoday.com)
