Results are in: only 17% pass the Bar exams

DAVAO CITY, Philippines – The Supreme Court (SC) of the Philippines has announced Wednesday the result of the 2012 Bar Examinations after a special en banc session.

In a statement posted in its website, SC said that out of the 5,343 bar examiners, 946 have passed or only 17 percent of the total number.

Ignatius Michael of the Ateneo de Manila University (AdMU) topped the exams with 85.64 percent rating.  Five other AdMU students made it to the top ten list: Catherine Beatrice King Kay (Top 2, 84.72%), Xavier Jesus Romualdo (Top 4, 84.10%), Jose Maria Angel Machuca (Top 5, 83.99%), Marvy Llamas (Top 8, 83.29%) and Carlo Martin Li (Top 9, 83.27%).

Four bar takers from the University of the Philippines (UP) also made it to the list: April Carmela Lacson  (Top 3, 8448%), Maria Graciela Base (Top 5, 83.99%), Patrick Henry Salazar (Top 6, 83.71%) and Francis Paolo Tiopianco (Top 10, 83.25%).

Ralph Karlo Barcelona from Aquinas University made it to the Top 7 with 83.43 percent rating.

According to the SC, 5,686 bar takers were originally admitted but only 5,343 completed the four-Sunday exams held last October at the University of Sto. Tomas in España, Manila.

SC said that the oath-taking of the successful passers will be on April 24 at the Philippine International Convention Center.

Bar examinations, according to the SC, are done every year pursuant to Article VIII, Sec. 5 of the Philippine Constitution.

For the past 11 years or from 2000 to 2010, the average number of bar examinees is 5,295 with an average of 1,307 passers.  (Marilou Aguirre-Tuburan/davaotoday.com)
