DAVAO CITY — Women’s partylist Gabriela calls for justice for the 17-year old college student who was raped and killed in Cebu City.
Karen Montebon, a first year accounting student at the University of San Carlos in Cebu was found dead inside her home in Barangay Suba-Maslog in Lapu-Lapu City at 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday.
She had bruises and a cord of a hair straightener was tied around her neck. Physicians at the Mactan Doctors’ Hospital said she died of strangulation and that lacerations in her sex organ suggest that she was raped.
Representative Luz Ilagan said “Karen is the latest rape-slay victim that demonstrates the vulnerability of young women to violence.”
“We join the demands for a thorough probe that will bring the perpetrators of this crime to justice,” said Ilagan.
Leny Ocasiones, Gabriela-Cebu Chairperson and a professor at the University of San Carlos said, “let this tragedy be a lesson and a call for awareness, community action and a commitment for everyone to rage against rape and fight violence against women.”
Meanwhile, Rep. Emmi de Jesus also challenged authorities to resolve the case in the soonest possible time.
“The challenge of bringing perpetrators to justice now lies in the hands of the local police as well as the entire Cebu community,” she said. (davaotoday.com)
