DAVAO CITY — Hundreds of volunteers from different organizations and national government agencies converged at the entrance of Riverfront along the Maa diversion road in Davao City for the opening program of Arbor Day Celebration.
The volunteers planted thousands of Malibago seedlings on both sides of the Davao River, a specie that is endemic, fast growing and has capacity to regenerate by itself. Most importantly, Malibago is effective in preventing further erosion of riverbanks.
Six barangays near the Davao River have been identified as planting areas: Tigatto, Mandug, Callawa, Waan, New Carmen and New Valencia.
The activity reminds volunteers of the vital role of trees in the environment and to human life stressing that planting more trees more and preserving our remaining forest cover will ensure the continuous, adequate and good quality of water supply.
The Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) in Southern Mindanao, in coordination with the Association of the Regional Executives of National Agencies (Arena), spearheaded the activity in response Presidential Proclamation No. 396 signed in 2003, where President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo declared June 25 of every year as Philippine Arbor Day and the date to be observed nationwide by planting trees and ornamental plants through appropriate ceremonies.
Congressman Isidro T Ungab of the 3rd District of Davao City, in his speech at the opening program, urged the volunteers to also advocate for the protection of Davao River. (PIA-XI)
