12 June 2007 Philippine Ambassador to Nigeria Masaranga R. Umpa reported to the Department of Foreign Affairs that the Filipino seafarer seized by unnamed militants in Bayelsa State, Nigeria on 25 May 2007 was released on the evening of 11 June (Nigeria time) to Nigerian authorities and is now undergoing medical examinations.
The Filipino seafarer was abducted along with four British nationals, three Americans, one South African and one Nigerian. The abduction took place at around 7:00 a.m. (Nigeria time) of 25 May 2007 when several boatloads of armed men attacked the offshore construction barge where the victims were working. Foreign Affairs Secretary Alberto G. Romulo expressed the gratitude of the Philippine Government to the government of Nigeria and the government of the Bayelsa State, as well as the governments of the United Kingdom, the United States and South Africa, and the employers, for their efforts and cooperation in securing the release of the Filipino seaman and the other victims.
