DAVAO CITY — VARIOUS shipping industry players in Mindanao will converge for two days to discuss a number of issues concerning the said sector.
The 6th Mindanao Shippers Conference (Minshipcon), slated on June 21 to 22 at the Grand Regal Hotel here in Davao City, is expected to draw in hundreds of participants, majority of which comes from the five shipper associations in Mindanao, namely: Northern Mindanao Shippers Association, Inc. (Norminsa) of Cagayan de Oro City; Zamboanga City Shippers Association, Inc. (Zamcisa); SOCKSARGEN Shippers Association, Inc. (SSA); Iligan Bay Shippers Association, Inc. (Ibsa); and Zamboanga del Norte Shippers Association, Inc. (Dipolog City).
With this years theme, Efficient Shipping and Transport for Global Competitiveness, Trade Assistant Secretary Merly M. Cruz said the conference will be an opportunity for the shippers, shipping companies, cargo forwarders, and even government agencies to tackle and present recommendations that can address the woes of the industry.
Cruz added that Davao Region, being the major source of top export products such as fresh banana and banana chips, will benefit from the decision of the events host, the Mindanao Federation of Shippers Association (Minfesa), to conduct the Minshipcon in Davao City.
Since the venue is just within Davao City, a lot of our port and shipping industry players, even the exporters, can join and have the chance to share their insights. Moreover, the fact that this years Shippers Congress will focus on global competitiveness, they will gain knowledge on how to further their business and become globally competitive, she said.
Cruz is optimistic the Minshipcon will gain positive results in terms of pushing for certain measures necessary for the industrys development.
The Minshipcon is supported by the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI), Growth with Equity in Mindanao (GEM) program, and Mindanao Business Council (MinBC).
