DAVAO CITY – This year’s Davao Trade Expo 2015 will highlight the aquaculture industry as aquatic resources in the open-ocean are reportedly declining.

Aquaculture industry is the farming of aquatic organisms like fish, shellfish, and water plants where it cultivates both marine and freshwater species. Its productions ranges from inland to open-ocean.

President of the Mindanao Integrated Aquaculture Association, Dr. Alex Tan said that “it is high time that we develop the aquaculture in our area so we could protect the wild catch.”

Tan said that the aquaculture is progressing well here, saying that they are now culturing Bangus (milkfish), Lapu-lapu (grouper), and other species.

Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources Region XI Director Fatima Idris said that in Cateel, Davao Oriental, eel is one of their products that is being exported.

Idris, however, said that they are still developing mechanisms for shipment and exporting Eels since it is prohibited to export young eels.

DATE is an annual trade fair, which is headed by the Davao City Chamber of Commerce and Industry Inc.

DATE is expected to gather 10,000 participants featuring not only aquaculture but also livestock, poultry and game fowl industries. (davaotoday.com)
