DAVAO CITY — The latest fire incident that damaged at least 45 houses in Piapi Boulevard on Monday, March 22, is only one of the hundreds of fire-related mishaps recorded by the Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) in this region.

Nestor Gimenez, BFP XI chief of operations division, said their office has recorded 147 cases of fire accidents in the city since the year started.

On Monday, the fire started in the house owned by a certain Haizan Hassan, which eventually gutted down other houses in the boundary of Barangays 31-D and 21-C. Gimenez said the accident might be caused by a worn electrical outlet.

“We are also warning the public of electrical arcing due to loose connection,” said Gimenez.

The damage brought by accident is estimated to reach P1 million, he said.

In a data obtained by Davao Today from the BFP XI, the agency has tallied 348 fire incidents in Davao Region as of March 15.

The record is slightly higher than the previous period last year with 327 fire incidents. Davao City also topped the list in the region with 130 fire incidents. Out of the 130 incidents, 54 were structural fire and 50 were grass fires.

On March 8, at least 61 houses were gutted by fire in Purok 13-B, and Purok 21 in Kasilak Barangay 76-A Bucana. After two days another fire broke razing more than 100 houses in Purok 12, Purok 12-A, and 12-B in St. John also in Barangay 76-A.

Fire incidents are common in the Philippines especially during the month of March, where temperature could reach beyond 30 degree celsius, increasing the chances of fire accidents. (davaotoday.com)
