DAVAO CITY, Philippines – A leader of Barug Katawhan, a movement of Pablo victims in Southern Mindanao, was “shot dead at around 6 PM Monday after attending a barangay session,” a report from human rights group Karapatan said.
Cristina Morales Jose, a councilwoman of Binondo village, Baganga town in Davao Oriental, was one of the leaders of a camp-out at the DSWD regional office last week, according to Pastor Jaime Jurie, secretary general of Karapatan, in a text message.
Jose was reportedly on her way to Davao City after the village session “to report the cases of human rights violations” done against her and those who participated in last week’s barricade.
After arriving back in their community from the three-day camp out, Jose and other typhoon victims were allegedly “harassed by the barangay captain and the military from the Army’s 67th Infantry Battallion,” Karapatan said.
“We should condemn the killing of Cristina Jose just as we have condemned the government agencies that were responsible for the aggravated suffering of the typhoon victims due to the non-delivery of much-needed food and relief,” said Karapatan-national in a message posted in its Facebook account.
“They demanded food and justice. Is this what the state will respond to their demands — kill their leaders?,” Karapatan-National added.
Glades Maglunsod of Bagong Alyansang Makabayan condemned the “fascist AFP and the Aquino government’s Oplan Bayanihan” for the killing of Jose, as they demanded justice for the Barug Katawhan leader and typhoon Pablo victim who “was brutally killed.” (John Rizle L. Saligumba/davaotoday.com)
