davao city — As part of its advocacy on media responsibility, the Embassy of Canada, in partnership with the Ateneo de Davao Universitys Humanities department, is sponsoring a forum on media reporting and the elections. Entitled Whos Watching Whom? the forum will be held on Friday, April 27, 2007, 9:30-11:30 am at the Ateneo de Davao University main campus on C.M. Recto Street, Davao City. Registration starts at 9:00 a.m. Admission is free.
The Canadian Embassy is bringing three veteran and acclaimed investigative journalists to be the speakers in the panel: Ellen Tordesillas, chief of reporters and columnist for MALAYA, Yvonne Chua, former training director of the Philippine Center for Investigative Journalism (PCIJ) and currently a lecturer at the University of the Philippines College of Mass Communication, and Luz Rimban, former director of the broadcast desk of the PCIJ and currently a professor at the Ateneo de Manila University.
Canadian Ambassador Peter Sutherland will open the forum. Representatives from civil society and the local media have been invited as reactors.
Ms. Tordesillas talk Watching the Campaign, will provide a behind-the-scenes view to a reporters life during the campaign season. It will also talk on how media covers the campaign period and the stories that do not make the broadcast or the print cut. Ms. Rimbans presentation Watching the Elections will focus on how media uncovered cheating and fraud in the previous elections while Ms. Chuas talk Watching the Media, will give the public an opportunity to know how they can hold the media accountable to balanced and ethical coverage of the elections.
The forum aims to invite local media, students and teachers of mass communication, journalism, political science, and other related social sciences. It is also open to members of civil society, non-governmental organizations, and even representatives from government agencies who are interested to know how media, one of the most influential tools in the electoral campaign, works either to the victory or defeat of a political candidate.
