DAVAO CITY – The National Union of Peoples’ Lawyers (NUPL) held a forum Friday regarding the political and legal issues of migrant workers in trouble with the law abroad.
The forum, “In the Shadow of the Gallows: From Flor to Mary Jane (In the Defense of our Migrant Workers)”, discussed the phenomenon of Filipinos on death row abroad, identified the vulnerabilities of Filipino migrant workers, with emphasis on trafficking offenses.
Speakers of the forum were Connie Bragas-Regalado, chair of Migrante Partylist; Attys. Edre Olalia and Josalee Deinla, the Philippine private lawyers of Mary Jane Veloso from NUPL; Dean Luis Teodoro, Deputy Director, Center for Media Freedom and Responsibility; Monique Wilson, director for international affairs of Gabriela; Maritess Veloso and Neri Colmenares, NUPL chair and party-list representative of Bayan Muna.
