DAVAO CITY — Davao Region’s population grew by 9.5 percent over five years, which is higher than the national population growth rate, according to the Commission on Population 11.
Popcom 11 said the country’s population growth rate (PGR) has decreased to 1.72 as of August 2015, while Davao Region ranks sixth overall in surpassing the national data with a PGR of 1.74.
“This brings the region’s population to 4,893,318 from a previous 4,468,563, reflecting an increase of 9.5% over five years,” Popcom said.
In 2010, Davao region’s PGR was 1.97 which is higher by 0.23 point.
Among the provinces in the region Davao del Norte tops the list with 1,016,332, followed by Compostela Valley (736,107); meanwhile the least populated province is Davao Occidental, with 316,342.
Davao City still ranks first among the cities with 1,632,991, followed by Tagum City with 259,444; and Samal with 104,123.
Meanwhile, Santo Tomas in Davao del Norte ranks first as the most populated municipality with 118,750, followed by Malita in Davao Occidental (117,746); and Boston, Davao Oriental, with 13,535.
The Commission said the 2015 Population Census “has shown continuing and slowing growth rates nationwide resulting in a population that is lower by half a million this 2015 compared to the projected population generated by the 2010 census.”
The Autonomous Region of Muslim Mindanao topped the regions that exceeded the national PGR in 2015 with 2.89. Central Luzon follows with 1.95, Soccsksargen with 1.94, and Central Visayas with 1.76. (davaotoday.com)
